Physical Activity Strategy

The more you move, the better you feel. That's why physical activity is a key component of a healthy and happy lifestyle. BCHLA has four initiatives to take British Columbians from the TV to the trails. Knowing that small steps lead to big results, and that their actions can influence their children and aging parents, adults are the primary target. By blazing the trail, BC parents can help their children walk a mile or more in their shoes.

BCHLA Initiatives are:

Built Environment and Active Transportation (BEAT)

BEAT is a joint initiative between the BC Recreation and Parks Association and the Union of BC Municipalities and is funded through the BC Healthy Living Alliance.

Healthy communities don’t happen by accident. How our buildings, parks, transportation networks are designed, and other elements of the so-called “built environment” can have a profound effect on encouraging or discouraging physical activity.

Built Environment refers to all human-made surroundings - the spaces where we live, work and play. the built environment includes tangible structures, such as buildings, streets, parks, businesses, schools, road systems, transportation networks, and other infrastructure.

Active Transportation all human-powered forms of travel, such as walking, cycling, in-line skating, skate boarding, skiing, canoeing etc.  Walking and cycling are the most  popular and can be combined with other modes, such as public transit.

Community Based Awareness (CBA)

Raising awareness from the ground up.

Everybody Active

Walk BC

Implementation of the Physical Activity Strategy is being led by the BC Recreation and Parks Association. Funding is provided by the BC Healthy Living Alliance, with support from ActNow BC.

Goals and Targets

The goal of the BCHLA Physical Activity Strategy is to implement activities that will help achieve the BCHLA Targets for 2010:

  • 7 out of 10 British Columbians will be physically active.

  • 7 out of 10 British Columbians will be at a healthy weight.

To achieve these targets, BCHLA has three objectives to support British Columbians:

  • To encourage physical activity by focusing directly on the 35-54 year old target population.

  • To build on existing opportunities and infrastructure.

  • To create supportive environments that nourish and enhance physical activity.

Fast Facts…

  • 51% of British Columbians are not sufficiently physically active.

  • Brisk walking has the greatest potential for increasing the overall activity levels of a sedentary population.
