BC Alliance for Healthy Living Looking to Bump Up the Health Quotient in the Families Agenda

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

The BC Alliance for Healthy Living, a coalition of 9 major health and community organizations, released its Healthy Families Agenda today.

The Agenda includes recommendations to prevent chronic disease and improve the health of BC families – ranging from revitalizing aging recreation facilities to incentives for local food production to ending subsidies for movies that portray smoking.

Barbara Kaminsky, Chair of the BC Alliance for Healthy Living and CEO, Canadian Cancer Society BC & Yukon Division said, “BCAHL believes that in the province of British Columbia, we’re moving in the right direction but more needs to be done if we want to improve outcomes for those who aren’t healthy now and have a higher risk for chronic disease down the road”.

She congratulated the Premier on her announcement today of a Healthy Families Strategy. “This strategy will help move BC to the front of the pack in health promotion in Canada” said Kaminsky. “The strategy’s first program – Prescription for Health builds on the experience of BCAHL and could open the door to a healthier lifestyle for many British Columbians”.

BCAHL is looking forward to more announcements and to working with the BC Government on policies to prevent disease, promote health and control health care costs in our province.

The BC Alliance for Healthy Living is the largest health promotion team ever assembled in the history of BC. It was formed in 2003 with a Vision of a healthy British Columbia and a focus on the common risk factors and underlying determinants of chronic disease.
