Help us create the way for a healthier future: an update on Bill S-228

Children see 25 million food and beverage ads per year and over 90% are for foods high in salt, sugar and saturated fat.

The Stop Marketing to Kids Coalition has been working hard to get Bill S-228 through its final vote in the Senate of Canada so it can become law. The bill will restrict the marketing of foods and beverages high in salt, sugar and saturated fat to children 12 and under.

And we need your help!

Bill S-228 is at the final stage – it is just waiting for the final vote in the Senate. Unfortunately, the vote is being stalled despite the fact that it was first introduced in the Senate in 2016.  The bill has been studied and debated for almost three years, and has strong support from both the House of Commons and the Senate.

We know that dietary behaviours fostered in childhood persist into adulthood.  The World Health Organization encourages restricting food marketing to children as a meaningful public health intervention to protect children’s health and children’s rights. In Canada, diet-related diseases were responsible for approximately 47 000 deaths in 2016 and costing the Canadian economy over $26 billion annually.

We need our Senators to do their jobs, stop stalling and pass Bill S-228!

Help us create the way for a healthier future for children in Canada. Send a message to our Senators to stop delaying and vote in favour of Bill S-228, which will restrict the marketing of foods and beverages high in salt, sugar and saturated fat to children 12 and under in Canada.
