Sample Letter to the Candidate

Dear Candidate,

Congratulations on your decision to run in the upcoming election!

I’m writing to flag some issues that I think are important and should be a consideration for the representative of our region and for the government of British Columbia.

BC has a good healthcare system but it could be strengthened if more resources were put into disease prevention and healthy living so that people can stay healthier for longer.

The BC Alliance for Healthy Living has polled British Columbians on some important health policies that have the potential to dramatically improve health outcomes. Their research finds that across BC:

  • 85% believe in supporting affordable childcare;
  • 76% (29% strongly) support an Active Transportation Strategy and fund to make communities more walkable and bike-friendly;
  • 76% want more affordable rental housing for those with low and middle incomes;
  • 69% support a poverty reduction strategy; and
  • 66% want more smoke free places.

All of these influence our ability to be healthy, avoid disease as well as improve our life expectancy, and I count myself among the many British Columbians who support them.

I’m looking forward to hearing back from you about your plans to address these broader health issues.

Sincerely,
